If you do an online search about nutrients for heart function support, CoQ10 is sure to pop up as your top result. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is produced naturally by our bodies; and is found in nearly every cell in our body, but is concentrated in the organs that require the most energy. These include the heart, liver, muscles and kidneys. CoQ10 is concentrated in these specific organs because it’s essential to the process of producing cellular energy from the food that we eat.
Ubiquinol is the reduced version of Coenzyme Q10 and is the active form of CoQ10. Most young people into their twenties are able to effectively use CoQ10 supplements, however those in their thirties and up seem to do better with Ubiquinol, as it’s more readily absorbed. There are also some people who lack the enzyme that helps to convert the CoQ10 to Ubiquinol. It can be partly due to aging, but it’s also genetic. These people in particular can benefit greatly from taking Ubiquinol supplements instead of CoQ10.
Recent research has also shown that you can improve your body’s conversion of CoQ10 to Ubiquinol by eating lots of green leafy vegetables. You can also improve absorption of CoQ10 by taking it with a small amount of healthy fat, such as some olive oil, coconut oil, or avocados.
Why Take CoQ10 or Ubuquinol Supplements?
CoQ10 helps to protect against cellular damage from free radicals. Taking a CoQ10 supplement is especially important if you take a statin drug for cholesterol. Statins deplete your body of CoQ10. The longer you’re on a statin, the more ubiquinol-starved your body becomes, and the more severe the side effects can become, including speeding up the progression of heart disease. CoQ10 / Ubiquinol supplements are also appropriate for those with other chronic diseases besides heart problems; such as diabetes, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), chronic fatigue and autism.
